3 truths about weight loss

Your scale weight is a measure of gravity against your body. And that’s it. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Independent of additional data, scale weight change tells us very, very little about what’s happening in your body.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Tell me:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
>> would you care so much about scale weight change if it meant you were just swooshing water around?⁣ eat fewer carbs and you might see weight loss – but it’s water loss. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
>> would you celebrate weight loss if it meant feeling weak and being flat? eat very low calorie and you might see weight loss – but it’s loss of muscle.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
>> would you feel like a failure if your weight didn’t change but you looked leaner and more muscular? eat high protein and you might not see weight loss – but you’ve lost fat. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Check it out: tracking macros is one of the most efficient and effective ways to influence body composition. You can use scale weight AND additional data points to determine the change that’s happening with your body composition or, you can completely ignore the scale and use alternative data points to determine the change that’s happening with your body composition. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That’s what you really care about, right?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I know for many of you, the relationship with the scale is really complicated. I know because I work with women every single day who struggle – even when they know better. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If that’s you, here’s an exercise I want you to noodle on:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
>> what story am I telling myself about myself when I weigh 10 pounds less than I do right now?⁣ when I weigh 15 pounds more than I do right now?⁣
>> what words do I use to describe myself when I see the scale going down?⁣ when I see the scale going up?⁣
>> what if my weight never changed but it meant I achieved everything I ever wanted? ⁣⁣
>> what if I achieved my goal weight but it meant incredible sacrifice in the way that I showed up at work, with my family, or in my professional life?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Try saying the answers out loud to yourself or to someone you trust. Do they surprise or shock you? ⁣You might have some work to do and you might need some assistance from a coach. ⁣
